Tooth Colored Fillings
Tooth Colored Fillings in Anchorage, Alaska
If you have ever had a large amalgam filling, you may have felt self conscious about the way that it looked. Many of us have been there, and we know what it feels like to feel as if everyone’s gaze is immediately drawn to the big silver spot in your teeth. The good news is that here at Delaney Park Dental, our dental practice in Anchorage provides tooth colored fillings and we can even replace your old amalgams so that you can be confident in your smile!
Composite tooth colored fillings are a major advancement in dental health from the old silver amalgam fillings that many dentists used to use. People prefer the white filling that blends into your tooth over the silver filling that lets everyone see that you had tooth decay at some point, and it is probably pretty clear why.
What is a Composite Tooth Filling?
Composite is made of plastic and ceramic and it bonds to your tooth as your dentist builds it up and tries to get a perfect match to what your tooth was before. This allows your dentist to repair decay after removing the bacteria, and it also allows chipped teeth to be repaired quite easily.
Up until about 10 or 15 years ago, amalgam was still pretty common, but now most dentists have moved on to composites because they look better, work better, and are better for you health wise.
Do Tooth Colored Fillings Work as Well as Silver Fillings?
Many people wonder if tooth colored fillings actually work as well as composite fillings, or whether they just look better aesthetically. Many of our patients are surprised to find out that tooth colored fillings actually work better than amalgam fillings. The composite material bonds to the surface of your tooth better which forms a tighter seal (less space for bacteria), and also means that the dentist can preserve more of your natural tooth. So not only does it look significantly better, it also works better too. Win, win!
How Do I Know if I am a Good Candidate for Composite Fillings?
If you have tooth decay that can reasonably be restored with a filling, you are a good candidate for composite fillings. If your old amalgam fillings are small enough that they can be removed without getting too close to the root, you are a good candidate for composite fillings.
In short, if you have anything on your tooth that can be restored with a filling rather than a crown, an inlay, or an onlay, you are a good candidate for tooth colored fillings.
If you ever have any questions about whether or not you are a good candidate for a procedure, it is always a good idea to consult a dentist.
